What’s My Story?

In a Jiffy

Good morning and welcome to Quilt Meets World! My name is Russ. By day, I’m a computer geek in the Finance and Accounting group of a local media conglomerate. It’s a role that can be exciting at times and mundane at others. In short, I’m fluent in both code and business and I’m a go-between between the two. I work with some amazing people and love the challenges that come with the position.

In my time away from work, I enjoy quilting. I’ve been putting blocks together since January 2009. I’ve taken a few classes in traditional piecing at my local quilt shop and learned paper piecing from David Gilleland of Vector Quilts. I also have had the opportunity to pay it forward and teach paper piecing to beginners under his brand.

More recently I’ve been focused on completing UFOs and working on new-to-me patterns. A quilter’s life isn’t complete unless they have an endless supply of UFOs!

Defy limitations

The idea of perfection is the hardest ting to give up while learning.  Our bodies have a tendency to tense up when we’re trying to “do it right.”  Letting go and having fun is the key.  Creativity flows when you don’t have a fear of making happy accidents!

Try a different color for a background.  Play with a fabric line that’s different.  Drop your feed dogs and let the stitches fly.  No project is a failure, rather a learning experience.  The worst that can happen is you have fun and create a donation quilt.  Win-Win!

True to Me

I’ve learned with quilting, there’s a few guiding principles:

  • Believe in yourself!
  • Push your comfort zone
  • Keep the joy
